Before you call Berkeley Systems PC Technical Support, scan this guide for your specific problem and see if we've already found a solution. Installation and Anti-Virus Software --------------------------------- Before installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK, disable all anti-virus software on your machine, as it could interfere with the installation. To disable your anit-virus software, consult the software's documentation. Installation and PC Tools Desktop for Windows 3.1 -------------------------------------------- When the installer for YOU DON'T KNOW JACK finishes, it will ask you to restart Windows 3.1x. If you are using PC Tools Desktop for Windows 3.1x, you may find that the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK installer relaunches when Windows restarts. In this case you can safely exit the installer by pressing the ESC key, because all of the necessary files for YOU DON'T KNOW JACK will already have been installed. Launching YOU DON'T KNOW JACK for the First Time ---------------------------------------------- The first time you launch YOU DON'T KNOW JACK, the application initializes many of its settings in order to optimize its performance on your particular system. The initialization may take a while, so sit back and relax. Sound Quality Problems --------------------- If you hear "stuttering" audio during the game or during heavy hard-drive and CD-ROM-drive access, contact your CD-ROM drive and audio card vendors to make sure that you have the latest drivers. Text Display Problems in Windows 3.1 ------------------------------------ Some drivers for older video cards may cause the text in YOU DON'T KNOW JACK to be displayed as large rectangles. If you encounter this problem, please contact your video card vendor to make sure you have the latest drivers for your card. If that does not alleviate the problem, try setting your video driver to use 256 colors. If it is already set to 256 colors and you still have this problem, please contact our PC Technical Support department (consult the User's Manual for contact information). "Cannot Load Wing.dll" ---------------------- On Windows 3.1 YOU DON'T KNOW JACK requires the WinG graphics library. If you run the Windows 3.1 version of YOU DON'T KNOW JACK and receive a system error "Cannot load Wing.dll," please re-install YOU DON'T KNOW JACK from the CD-ROM, restart your machine, and run the game again. Unusual Crashes -------------- If you experience unusual crashes running YOU DON'T KNOW JACK, make sure that your system is configured properly to run multimedia titles. Follow these instructions before calling Berkeley Systems PC Technical Support. For Windows 3.1x: 1. Delete YOU DON'T KNOW JACK directory from your hard drive. 2. Make sure that Windows is using at least a 10Mb permanent swap file. Consult your Windows manual for instructions on how to verify this. 3. Exit Windows and run SCANDISK. (With versions of DOS prior to 6.2, run CHKDSK /F to check the integrity of your hard disk(s).) 4. Run DEFRAG (with DOS 6.0 or greater) in a mode in which it fully defragments files and directories. 5. After completing these diagnostics restart your machine and restart Windows. 6. After Windows restarts, re-install YOU DON'T KNOW JACK. For Windows 95: 1. Uninstall YOU DON'T KNOW JACK using the uninstall option in the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK portion of your Start menu. 2. Select System Tools (START, Programs, Accessories, System Tools) and run the integrated ScanDisk utility. Also run the System Tools Disk Defragmenter. 3. Restart Windows 95. 4. After Windows restarts, re-install YOU DON'T KNOW JACK. If problems persist, verify that you are using the most current and appropriate drivers for your CD-ROM drive, sound card, and video card. You can contact the technical support departments of your hardware vendors for information.
