To those who were not associated with Wofford College during the school year this book will unfold a new story. To those who were connected with the college, either as students or otherwise, it will re-create many of the pleasant experiences of the year.
In attempting to tell the story of life here at Wofford, it is necessary to seek the variety of influences and interests of the students, not merely in the classrooms and laboratories, but in the fraternity dances, the athletic events, the Saturday evening visits to Converse and Limestone and even in the eternal "bull-sessions" of the dormitories. These social and extra-curricular events often rate first priority in the memories of the individual.
For, after all, everything is not learned in the classroom. The great variety of activities each serve in their own way to broaden the character and personality of the individual.
The dormitory is a great democratic institution with its own means of education. Pri- marily, it teaches self-reliance and its privileges and duties imbue each with a fundamental understanding of the rights of others.
The primary purpose of college life is the attainment of that coveted degree, and with it the enrichment of life by a fuller understanding of the world and the people with whom we live.
All of this we have attempted to portray for you on the pages of this yearbook. It has been treated as it occurred, informally and un-rehearsed, but even so, it was a difficult task, one that could never be quite completed and certainly not on these few pages.
At any rate, HERE IT IS ! We hope you like it ! ! !

HOMECOMING
The biggest weekend of the year got underway Friday, November 5th, with the annual Shirt-Tail Pa- rade. This time it was bigger and better than ever.
The return of the Alumni began Saturday with tours of the campus and buildings. The Alumni Din- ner was served at noon, after which some seven thou- sand spectators watched the Terriers humble the Presbyterians on Snyder Field.
During halftime ceremonies Dr. Greene read a proclamation whereby Miss Adeline Vaughn became the reigning monarch of Wofford College.
The weekend came to a close with a highly suc- cessful dance Saturday night.

Among Students IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES 1948-1949
Seven Wofford Seniors and one Junior were selected for inclusion in the 1948-1949 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universi- ties and Colleges.
The purpose of Who's Who is to serve as an incentive for the student to get the most out of his college career; as a standard of character and schol- astic measurement: and as a recommendation to the business world. The students are chosen on the basis of character, scholastic achievement, lead- ership, extra curricular activities and possibility of future usefulness to business and society.

SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS
So these are the Sophomores . . . the "wise- men" of the college. At least, they're confi- dent . . . even cocky.
They look down on the rats, but they still respect and envy the Senior. They're begin- ning to locate "The Rock," "The Zoo" and "The Hill" . . . Freshman forays to "The 'Verse" are just memories now. No worries . . . just exams, classes and pop-tests . . . nothing serious.

FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS
Ewing Cauthen Berckman Rochester
The "rats" . . . wearers of the little gold caps . . . very few veterans for a change ... in fact, a very small class . . . always wary of upper- classmen, especially those Sophomores . . . "rat" meetings . . . shirt-tail parade . . . Con- verse-Wofford Reception . . . never saw so many pretty girls at the same time before . . . Rush Week, everybody polite for a change, mad social whirl ... to pledge or not to pledge ... to pay or not to pay . . . then back to the old grind . . . Someday I'll be an Upperclassman.
